Getting to know each other
Please take time to post a short comment that tells me something about you and your professional focus. If you use a google account that identifies you as something other than your name please sign your post with a first name. This is a way to test out the blog and let me know if you are having issues. I'd also like to know one area of literacy you hope to learn more about!

I am a preschool teacher at Holland Elementary School in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. I love living in the NEK becuase of the wide variety of outdoor activities available here: downhill and nordic skiing, cycling, and hiking. I too have chickens (3 hens and a rooster) and hope to get a new batch of chicks in the spring. I am interested in learning more about assessments for K-3rd graders and different teaching strategies for early readers and writers.
ReplyDeleteHi...I already did this and it got lost somehow...so if there are two postings from me, that is why! Anyhow, my name is Karen Abbott and i live in Orwell with my husband jacob. We have a cat, Kypling who is a holy terror! We also own 5 chickens (4 hens and a rooster...LOVE them!!) I teach preschool for 3-5 year olds in Middlebury and love every second. I taught kindergarten for 5 years and have a bachelors in elementary education. I decided to teach prek becuase I love the freedom that I have with the curriculum. Basically, I can teach whatever the children possess an interest in and that enthralls me! I can also take my lessons as far as my children wish to go with them. I am empowering my children to make choices on their own and that feeling elates me versus teaching a prescribed "canned" curriculum. Since I am teaching at a center for children of ages birth through age 5, I really want to learn more about the progression of learning from a very early age. I would like to look at an infant who is mouthing a book or a toddler who is just becoming interested in looking at the pages of books and know what it is that they may be thinking and how I can get the most out of the moments I see.
ReplyDeleteso, this is a second attempt for me also--hope it comes through!
ReplyDeletei am cathy siggins; i live in brattleboro (three cats, no chickens!) with my husband and two adolescent children. i received my early childhood special education endorsement almost three years ago through the HEC program, completed my Master's in Curriculum and Instruction last spring and would now like to round this out by adding the birth to eight endorsement to my teaching license.( i chose the special education licensure only because we had to choose, and i felt i needed this knowledge base to work in any classroom)
i am currently working in a wonderful positon as early education outreach teacher in windham northeast SU; i support several private programs which have public pre-k partnerhships, and i have my own classroom with ten hours of public pre-k.
i am excited about expanding my learning in language and literacy, as this is an area of passion for me as an educator.
look forward to meeting you all
I am Valerie Kosednar. For many many years I taught Music to Elementary and Preschool children. I have always loved this work and still do music teaching gigs afterschool and during the summers. While being a music teacher is wonderful, I longed to have my OWN class. Last year I taught Kindergarten and this year I have a First Grade class. I look forward to meeting/seeing you all on Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHi - I am Paula Borochoff. I had been a special education teacher for many years, working primarily with elementary and middle school children with intensive needs. My goal was to help children integrate into their classroom community. I always wanted to create my own classroom community and two years ago got that opportunity and currently teach kindergarten at Westminster Schools. I am looking forward to learning more about providing literacy experiences to young children and look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning.
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone! I am Kylie Richardson. I live in Hyde Park with my husband and two children. I also teach Preschool at Hyde Park. This is my second year and am working on finishing my Early Childhood Endorsement. I am excited to continue my work with my literacy curriculum and share out with my school. I would like to learn more about the assessments used for Preschool children entering Kindergarten.
ReplyDeleteHello! I'm Joanna Labejsza, but everyone knows me as Asia. I live in Rochester with my boyfriend, our 2 cats, and his 200 registered holsteins! I teach 2 and 3 year olds at a birth through pre-K center. I recently graduated from Middlebury College with a completely unrelated degree and shortly after realized my passion for Early Education. I hope to teach with preschool aged children to better understand child development and education in Vermont before pursuing a Masters in Educational Policy. See you on Saturday!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Betsy Barstow. Lindy and her family are our next door neighbors. We buy eggs from them and they are delicious. I began teaching in the 80's when I taught ESL and bilingual ed. in Cali, Colombia. In Vermont, I taught middle school art and high school Spanish. After a long hiatus to raise a family and work on the land with my husband, I have decided to go back to teaching. I'm particularly interested in preschool, bilingual ed. and teaching ELL. I would like to learn about teaching literacy to young ELLs: approaches and resources.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Ashley. I am licensed to teach K- Grade 6 and am currently working on adding an early education endorsement. I teach preschool at Blue Mountain Union School in Wells River, VT. I have been there 5 years and enjoy it very much. I am hoping for a refresher on how to support beginning readers in my preschool program.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Emily Morse. I live in St. Albans with my husband, and 7 1/2 month old daughter. We also have 2 dogs and 1 cat. I am currently working as a Pre-K teacher of 3-5 year olds in the Swanton Head Start classroom. This is my third year working as a preschool teacher. I currently hold a K-gr 6 teaching license and am working on adding my early ed endorsement. My focus for this class would be how to develop activites that promote early literacy skills for children of various levels.
ReplyDeleteHi all- This is Heather Benton from Essex Junction. I live with my husband Mark, daughter (15) and son (13), a large mutt and a small tortoise. I have come around to teaching through a background in sales, followed by a long stint at home with my children, and rather like Lindy, a progression of jobs in the education/non-profit sector, all of them working with families, young children, and the connections to the community that support them.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I teach the three year olds at Carolyn's Red Balloon Enrichment Center in Colchester. I have a BA in Psychology from UVM, and this is the final course for me in the HEC series.
My house overflows with books, and I celebrated my first paycheck by heading to Barnes and Noble and treating myself to picture books for my library
I would like to understand the progression of reading skills and writing skills, and how to document progress in the early years, so that noone ever refers to my read alouds as "just story time".
This is a diverse group! It's so great to read about you and learn your interests and hopes for this class. It's amazing how many people have chickens and enjoy them. I enjoyed Saturday and am looking forward to the next few months with all of you. Thank you for sharing your information.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Becky Beyor from St. Albans. I currently teach prek at SATEC for HeadStart. I have been teaching preschool since 2004. I have 2 daughters, Bethany 8, and Siobhan 6. I have a license for K-6, and this is my last class for an endorsement in early childhood. I'm 30 and just got engaged last month!!! YAYAYAYAY! That is the highlight of my life right now. I would like to end my teaching career over seas this fall in Thailand, where my mother was born and raised. It will be an adventure searching for my maternal family and learning about my mother and how she was raised. I am planning on bringing my children along for the experience and leaving my fiance behind to plan and set up our wedding arrangements in time for me to return. I hope to take away many new literacy skills that I may use in everyday life with my interactions with students and peers alike.
ReplyDeleteHi My name is Aimee. I currently work in kindergarten at Putney central School as a classroom para-educator. I spent 4 years living in Sapporo Japan, teaching Kindergarten at an international school. I returned to the states to get my initial teaching license in Early Education and to get my Masters Degree. I am looking forward to learning more about providing literacy rich experiences for young children.
ReplyDeleteHi I’m Alexandra (Ali)I never did my intro but I know most of you already. I currently work with toddlers at Mary Johnson Children’s center in Middlebury. I will be with this group of children until they leave for kindergarten so I am very excited to learn about the beginnings of reading. My undergrad is in child development which focused mostly on psychology so; I haven’t taken a literacy class.
ReplyDeleteSorry I am getting to this so late but I had some issues getting signed onto the blog. So I am Jennie Grove, I work as a Behavioral Interventionist with a student on the autism spectrum. I have been in a EEE classroom for the last two years and am now in Kindergarten. My mother was a Kindergarten teacher so I have had lots of experience helping her plan and prepare as well. I have two daughters, Emma and Olive, with my partner James. We live in Hyde Park with our dogs, Sebastian and Isheba, our cat, Robin and our now six chickens (we lost one since last class). I love preschool and hope to become a preschool teacher.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Natessa. Most of you know me so I will keep this short and sweet. I teach pre-school for Head Start and love my students! I have done child care, summer camps, after school programs, mentoring programs, etc not to mention practicums for my undergrad and now teaching. I live in Winooski. I am really trying hard to get a dog. I like the outdoors, skiing, dancing, movies etc. I took Lang and Lit through UVM for the ELED program.
ReplyDeleteMy name appears as The Folded Egg, b/c I have a blog on blogspot, called the folded egg, b/c I made a bet with my friends I could cook eggs 100 ways b/c that's what all great cooks can do. And I told my friend... who said I couldn't do it. "watch me. Like it's hard.' I am finding that the actual cooking isn't hard, but keeping on top of it and finding recipes is a bit tiring. Although i'm 1/5 of the way there. But haven't been keeping up on my blog, due to time and the fact I started it so my gramp could have something to do :)
